Raleigh Weekend

It has been a very mild winter in NC (and everywhere from what it sounds like) and while I would love to see some snow, you can't complain about 65 degrees and sunny in January!  Crazy!  One Saturday Nick and I decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and explore a little.  Falls Lake is just minutes from where we live, so we picked up some sushi and headed to the lake for a picnic and a hike.  Being on the lake and in the woods, it is hard to believe you are still in Raleigh.

On Sunday, Nick's parents came to church with us and we went out for brunch afterwards.  We had fried chicken and waffles which may sound strange but it was seriously amazing!   After brunch we strolled around downtown.  There is so much to see and do in Raleigh.  We had a great weekend enjoying all it has to offer!

Good Reads

I have lots of time on my hands this summer- a luxury, I know.   I am always on the lookout for a good book and especially now that I have so much time to read.  Recently I finished Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand which is a biography of Louie Zamperini.  It's inspiring and eye opening- I highly recommend it.

The other book I just finished could not be more different-  The Guernesy Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer.  This book is much more lighthearted and makes for great summer reading.

My friend recently introduced me to Good Reads which is an awesome site.  You can list books you have read, want to read and are currently reading as well as rate those books and write reviews for them.  You can also find your friends on good reads and see what books they have read and what they liked- very helpful for finding new books.

So what should I add to my summer reading list?

Mr. Scheuer

Somehow last year I signed myself up to be the Spelling Bee coordinator for my school.  I already knew (but have since been reaffirmed) that something like this is not my forte.  The Spelling Bee was coming up in Roanoke, and I needed a sub for my class desperately.  I had called everyone on the list with no luck.

Lots of stressing out over the Bee and not having a sub went on over g-chat at lunch one day with Nick.  He kindly mentioned he would be willing to sub for my class.   Hmm.... ok!  I went to the office to ask about the process to become a sub.  Basically, you have to fill out a form and then have it approved (I do work at a private school after all). Done!

I spent Thursday evening giving Nick the rundown of my class.  I was only going to be gone for a half day, and he was confident.

The whole afternoon he kept sending me text message updates.  I couldn't wait to hear how his day went!  The verdict?  He loved it!  And so did my class.  At the end of the day they declared he was the best sub ever!  When I asked him what he thought about my job his response was "it's a lot of bossing little kids around." Ha!

Nick's Debute

So, if you live in NC you have probably heard of Our State magazine.  Over Christmas break, one of Nick's friends called to tell us he had seen Nick in the magazine.  He said it was an add for Mast General Store.  We laughed so much about this because while Nick did work at Mast all the way through college, he has not worked there since 2005.  This add appeared in the December issue...so weird!   While we were home, I would look for the magazine while I was out, but then soon forgot all about the whole thing.

The other day when I checked the mail, I had a letter from my sweet friend Meredith.  Look what was inside-

That's Nick on the right, helping that girl find the perfect backpack for her next adventure!  That job was perfect for him- he got to research and recommend the best outdoor gear.  Until he asked for more hours that is, and occasionally had to work in with the soaps and housewares.  Can't you just imagine him organizing soaps?
